HORSE PACKING CONTEST
ENTRY FEE: $100.00
June 7th • Only 8 teams will be selected
FIRST PLACE: $2,000
Sponsored by the Cody Country Outfitters & Guides Association
SECOND PLACE: $1500 THIRD PLACE: $1000
All participants will attend FREE as guests for the Cody Medical Foundation Dinner
June 5th at 5:00 p.m. at the Cody Auditorium where there will be a Live Calcutta Auction for the teams. Participants are encouraged to come show off their brand and dance to Loose as a Moose!
PACKING CONTEST RULES
Teams consist of two people, Cowboys & Cowgirls
TEAMS WILL SUPPLY:
2 Saddle horses and/or mules plus 2 pack animals, their personal equipment including riding saddles, halters, bridles, pads. Two saw buck pack saddles with two cinches and complete britching and breast collars, including 1⁄4 straps and four pack pads. NO quick cinch devices allowed.
All other equipment including pack saddles and pads, lash ropes, panniers, sling ropes and pack covers will be provided by the Festival Committee.
THE FESTIVAL WILL SUPPLY THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO BE PACKED:
2 bales of hay (to be slung with appropriate hitch over the sling with pack cover ) • 1 set chain hobbles 2 cool back horse pads • 1 set of box panniers • 2 horse bells
1 picket rope and stake • 1 8x10 wall tent • 2 camp chairs
ax, shovel & saw, (must be on top of the pack outside the cover when crossing the finish line) 1 dozen eggs • 1 Dutch Oven • 2 towels • 4 cups, 4 plates • 1 coffee pot • 1 six pack of pop
CHECK-IN WILL BE 8 A.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 7
RULES:
Contestants time will start when the judge says “go.” Their time will stop when the last of the team’s animals crosses
the Finish Line.
The overall winner will be the shortest running time after penalties are assessed.
Each team will be allowed to lay out their equipment while the previous team is unpacking and being judged. The organizing should not exceed 15 minutes.
Both horses and/or mules to be head and tailed using appropriate tail rope supplied by the Judge. Pack animals should not be tied hard and fast.
Both pack animals must be head and tailed when they cross the finish line. If not, the contestants will be disqualified. Pack animals must be double padded.

PENALTIES:
A broken or cracked egg is 10 seconds.
A leaking pop can is 10 seconds.
A missed gate on the obstacle course will be 20 seconds. Contestants have the option to
go back through any missed gates.
If a pack is leaning more than 6 inches off the center line of the horse’s back, after
crossing the Finish line, contestants will be penalized 30 seconds. Contestants have the option of straightening the pack before they cross the Finish line.
DECISIONS OF THREE JUDGES AND TWO TIMERS ARE FINAL EACH CONTESTANT WILL SIGN A LIABILITY WAIVER
